Harmanpreet-first Indian woman to score a century in T20I; led India to a 34 run win

Date:

Indian cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur led India to a 34 run win over New Zealand on Friday after she scored 103 off 51 balls in their first match of the tournament.

She became the first Indian to score a century in the Women’s T20 Internationals. Kaur smashed a ton off just 49 deliveries hitting seven fours and eight sixes, helping India post a daunting total of 194 for 5 in 20 overs against New Zealand at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Friday.

This was India’s highest-ever total in the history of the Women’s World T20.

Kaur also stitched a sensational 134-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues who also scored her fourth T20 half-century, hitting 59 off 45 deliveries.

Jemimah also became the youngest Indian to score a half-century in the T20s.

After a brilliant display with the bat, a combined bowling effort helped India restrict New Zealand 160 for nine in 20 overs. Chasing a mammoth target of 195, New Zealand got off to a solid start, but lost the momentum after losing three wickets in quick succession.

Suzie Bates (67) was the top scorer for the team. Katey Martin (39) played a brilliant knock but failed to take her team across the line. Radha Yadav (2-31) and Arundhati Reddy (1-36) were the other wicket takers for India.
