MP Governor Anandiben Patel increases reservation for OBCs to 27%

Date:

Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel approved an ordinance to increase reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 14% to 27% on March 10. The ordinance was issued by the state government to increase reservation quota for the OBC in government jobs and university admission in the state.

The announcement was made today by State Law and Legal Affairs Minister PC Sharma. It is being viewed as a step by Congress to gain the support of the OBCs ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath, while announcing the increase on March 6, had also announced the early implementation of the 10% reservation in government jobs and college admissions to the economically weaker sections in the general category.

“The ordinance has been issued and notified,” Sharma told PTI. Kamal Nath government chose the ordinance route to ensure its implementation before the Lok Sabha poll model code of conduct comes into effect, said PTI, quoting government officials.

After the approval, MP is likely the only state in the country where there is 27 per cent quota for OBCs, said officials.

While announcing the ordinance, Nath attacked the former BJP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan saying that the BJP was in power for 15 years and still they did not think about the OBCs of the state.
