Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday filed her nomination for the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Irani, who is contesting against Congress president Rahul Gandhi, was accompanied by her husband. Earlier, she held a four-kilometre roadshow along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Earlier in the day, the BJP leader performed a puja before visiting Amethi District Magistrate Ram Manohar Mishra to file her nomination papers.

Irani had contested against Gandhi in Amethi in 2014, and lost by 1.07 lakh votes. Amethi is considered a bastion of the Congress. The seat has remained mostly with the Congress since 1980.
Earlier on April 10, Rahul Gandhi had filed his nomination for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. Gandhi has won from Amethi three times, starting in 2004.
Amethi will go to poll in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 6. Results for all the seven phases will be declared on May 23.
