Jnanpith laureate writer and iconic actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away today at the age of 81. He was suffering from a prolonged illness and died due to multiple organ failure.

One of Karnad’s most memorable performances was his role as W.T. Srinivasan, Swami’s father in ‘Malgudi Days’. The story follows an adventurous child Swami and his friends Rajam And Mani, in a picturesque South Indian town called Malgudi.
Over the course of his prolific career, he has been part of many Television shows and films especially his performance as Shenoy, the RAW chief and Salman khans father in ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ which follows agent Tiger is sent to Dublin to observe an Indian scientist who is suspected of sharing nuclear secrets with the ISI.

In the movie Iqbal, Karnad won critical acclaim for his role as an opportunist cricket coach who chooses to favour a rich boy over a brilliant but poor and disabled Iqbal. The cast of the film also included Naseeruddin Shah as an alcoholic former cricketer and Shreyas Talpade as Iqbal.
In the movie ‘Dor’, Karnad plays a negative character of Randhir Singh, the father-in-law of Ayesha Takia. After his son’s death, he gets an offer to save his family castle in exchange for his beautiful and young daughter-in-law, a barter which he agrees to without much remorse.
The movie ‘Nishant’ was one of the most enduring roles of Karnad’s acting career. In the film, he plays a distraught schoolmaster and the film also stars Shabana Azmi. He was praised for his character in the film.
As a true icon took his last breath this Monday morning mourners and well-wishers from all around the country including PM Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter to share heartfelt posts on social media.
