Rahul Gandhi bent on stepping down as party president; says CWC will decide the next party chief

Date:

Congress’ performance in the general elections was nothing close to the whopping numbers that BJP garnered.
Right after the results were out, Congress President and prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi had announced that he would step down from the post. But the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision-making body of the Congress, had rejected his offer.

However, in a statement on Thursday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, made it clear that he would abide by his decision to step down from the post. He further added that he would not be involved with the selection process for the new party chief.

Rahul said: “I am not going to get involved in that process, otherwise it will complicate things and the party has to decide”. He further added that the party will decide on who his successor will be and not him.

Gandhi is adamant on stepping down as party president following his party’s debacle in the elections, but the CWC, has instead asked him to stay on and restructure the party at all levels.

Gandhi also responded to a question regarding the Rafale deal and maintained that there was “theft” in it.

“I maintain my stand that there has been theft in the Rafale jet deal,” he told reporters outside Parliament.

He has already stepped down as the leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha. The Congress finally picked five-time MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the post.
