Is MS Dhoni joining BJP post retirement? Here’s the fact check

Date:

In midsts of speculations of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket, a picture post has gone viral on social media which claims that Dhoni will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after retirement.

To support the claim, the post has pictures of MS Dhoni with former BJP President Amit Shah, Piyush Goyal and Manoj Tiwari.

The text on the picture read: रिटायरमेंट के बाद BJP के लिए नई पारी खेलेंगे महेंद्र सिंह धोनी की| क्रिकेट के मैदान में देश की शान बढ़ाने वाले MS धोनी भाजपा में होंगे शामिल| अब बहुत हुई क्रिकेट की पारी धोनी क्रिकेट के बाद राजनीति में संभालेंगे ज़िम्मेदारी|

At the time of filing this report, the above post was shared by over 1,800 Facebook users.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, we found the claim to be false.

On putting the keywords such as ‘MS Dhoni’, ‘BJP’ through a Google search, there was no reliable source to confirm the news about Dhoni joining BJP.

Moreover, there has been no announcement either by the BJP or by MS Dhoni about him joining the party.

Further, when we put the picture of MS Dhoni with BJP leaders through Reverse Image Search, we found that the picture was taken on August 5, 2018, during BJP’s Sampark for Samarthan drive when party leaders were meeting celebrities ahead of 2019 General Elections.

The above information proves that MS Dhoni has not joined BJP, hence the viral post is FAKE.
