The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, popularly known as the Triple Talaq Bill, was introduced in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
While introducing the Bill, Prasad said, “The Bill should not be seen from a political prism. It should not be seen as vote bank politics. It is an issue related to humanity…it is related to the dignity of the women…It is an issue of gender justice and equality.”

The contentious bill is expected to have a smooth passage through the Upper House as one non-aligned party declared support for it and ally Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) and the AIADMK walked out.
With the walkout of the 7 JD(U) MPs, the strength of the House has come down further, thus ensuring a smooth sail for the Bill.

In the 241-member House, the majority mark rests at 121. The NDA has 113 MPs and after the JDU walkout, the magic number required for the majority to pass the bill is set to slide.
Opposing the Triple Talaq Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Bill acts as a motive by the government to destruct Muslim families from within.

The AIADMK MPs staged a walk out of the Rajya Sabha on the Triple Talaq bill. MP SR Balasubramaniam said the party demanded that the Bill be sent to a select committee for scrutiny.
On July 25, the Lok Sabha passed the triple talaq bill by a voice vote amid opposition’s protest.
The Bill that proposes to protect the rights of married Muslim women by prohibiting the practice of divorce by pronouncing talaq by their husbands has been passed by the Lok Sabha.
