Mumbai rains: Schools, colleges remain closed; IMD warns of heavy showers

Mumbai: As the incessant rains continue to lashed Mumbai, all schools and colleges will remain closed in the city on Monday.

Maharashtra Education Minister declared holiday on Sunday in all schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region due to heavy rainfall.

While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also announced that all schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Monday. Some government offices providing emergency and essential services will remain open. Private office staff may move out only if essential.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that rains will continue to lash Mumbai and neighbouring areas for next few days. Heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging in many areas affecting normal life in Mumbai.

The Met department has further predicted that “heavy to very heavy rain” is likely to continue over Konkan and Goa.

The flood-like situation affected the railway services also. “Trains are being run at restricted speed at Nala Sopara due to water on railway tracks. There is no waterlogging anywhere else on Western Railway routes. Suburban services are functioning, ” tweeted Western Railway.

According to Western Railway, the traffic on the UP fast line is halted as water reached 180 mm above rail level. Trains are running on other three lines at Nala Sopara at restricted speed.

“Due to water over 180 mm on UP fast line at Nala Sopara, traffic was stopped. Hence there is a delay of about 15 minutes in suburban trains. Other three lines at Nala Sopara are working with trains running at restricted speed,” informed the Western Railway on Twitter.
