Lok Sabha adjourned sine die

New Delhi: Moments after the Lok Sabha passed the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019 which seeks to divide the state into two Union Territories, the Lower House was adjourned sine die on Tuesday.

The Bill was passed with 370 votes in favour and 70 against it. The House also passed the resolution to abrogate the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.

The resolution was passed in Lok Sabha by the division of votes with 351 members in support and 72 against it while one member abstained.

Speaker Om Birla winded up with his vies on the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha. “Remarkable work is done in this session in history from 1952 till now. Record 36 bills have been passed, more than 1,000 issues were raised in zero time,” he said.

He termed the session as the most productive session since 1952 that had 37 sittings and sat for a total of 280 hours.

With the first Parliament session in the second term of the Narendra Modi government, it has been the most productive ever for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

This session also sat a record for the passage of legislation, and setting new milestones in time consumed and participation of members, among other things.

The House discussed the Union Budget for over 17 hours and sat for over 70 extra hours. While the productivity of the House was 125 per cent.

It provided an additional opportunity for the government to clear 36 bills. From June 17 to August 6, there were a total of 37 sittings.
