EAM Jaishankar in China, holds talks with Chinese VP on strengthening of ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met the Vice President of China Wang Qishan at Zhongnanhai, on Monday. He arrived in Beijing on Sunday on a key three-day visit to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart on a wide range of issues.

“I am really glad that early in my period I had an oppotunity to visit China”, EAM Jaishankar said.

He will discuss the bilateral issues and prepare the ground for the Modi-Xi Summit, expected in October this year.

His official engagements will begin on Monday with a call on Chinese leadership.

The two foreign ministers will also close the high-level media forum that is being organised as part of the visit. NewsMobile Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla along with select Indian media leaders are part of the forum along with senior editors from the Chinese media.

He will also promote high-level people-to-people connect and iron out misperceptions about each other.

The two Foreign Ministers will lay the ground of the Modi-Xi summit expected in October.
Diplomatic sources say that the summit will be without any agenda and will allow both leaders to iron out.

What is expected in this visit? 

India is expected to flag that its action on Article 370 abrogation is an internal matter and both sides need to respect each other’s internal issues.

It will also be flagged that they should continue to ensure progress on issues such as trade, people-to-people cooperation and global issues such as trade so that they continue to expand their bilateral ties.

New Delhi valued the support given by China to ensure censure of Masood Azhar at the UNSC. While the two sides continue to have a range of issues where they disagree for now a tranquil boundary and growing trust is what they are working on and Xi-Namo summit is expected to cement that.

Jaishankar, who has served as Envoy to China, has managed some deft diplomacy with China and he will reassure the Chinese leadership that India and China should
continue to cooperate and grow together.
