Uttar Pradesh: SRTC launches women’s special helpline ‘Damini’

Date:

The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation on Monday, launched a dedicated women’s helpline named Damini.

This will be a calling and WhatsApp facility that will aid women’s safety. The number is 81142-77777. It will be operational initially from 9 am to 6 pm and will be handled by women officers of the corporation. After three months, it may be made operational 24 hours.

This has been launched as part of the Central’s government’s flagship ‘Nirbhaya Yojana’ scheme that seeks to financially boost the power of the state government in ensuring women’s safety.

“It is called Damini because of its specific nature and importance” said MD, UPSRTC, Raj Shekar.

Women can also call on 1800-180-2877 after 6pm.

The performance of this helpline number shall be reviewed every week.

This initiative has been taken as State Road Transport Corporation Buses are notoriously dangerous for women passengers.

India continues to fare poorly on all global indices that measure women’s empowerment. Participation in the work force still continues to be poor. Late working hours restrictions, safety issues prevent women from realizing their full potential, according to a survey.
