India calls for restraint amidst worries of escalation in US-Iran conflict post Soleimani killing

The Ministry of External Affairs has reacted on Friday to the killing of Major General Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Quds force, Iranian Revolutionary Guards by a drone strike at Baghdad.

Noting that it is a matter of concern to the global community, the Ministry acknowledged that in a statement which read: “we have noted that a senior Iranian leader has been killed by the US. The increase in tension has alarmed the world. It is vital that the situation does not escalate further.”

These incidents where the US and proxies supported by Iran have targeted each other since Sunday, has resulted in an increase in oil prices that will potentially harm India.

In the immediate aftermath of the drone strike, the oil prices rocked by nearly 4% in the morning of Asia trading hours while brent crude soared by 3.98% to US $68.90 per barrel, while US crude surged by 3. 87% to US $ 63.55 per barrel.

Keeping in mind the Indian interests, the Ministry added: “Peace, stability and security in the region is of utmost importance to India. India has consistently advocated restraint and continues to do so”.

Major General Soleimani was the head of the Quds force that has been accused of terrorizing much of the West Asian nations. On Thursday, his convoy was struck by a US drone in the Iraqi capital. He is believed to have died immediately.
