Closely monitoring the situation, engaging with other stake holders: MEA on West Asian crisis

India is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia following heightened tensions between the US and Iran. A dialogue has been held with the other stake holders in the region and beyond, the Ministry of External Affairs in a press briefing said on Thursday.

India also appreciated the US waiver on the Indian assisted Chabahar connectivity port project and in the same vein added that the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister is scheduled for later this month.

Here some of the other highlights of the press briefing :

1. On the question of the European Union (EU) delegation of envoys refusing to visit on a ‘guided tour’ of Jammu and Kashmir, the Spokesperson said that currently, 15 envoys are a two day visit to the union territory. They envoys represent a wide geographical representation of nations. They will be holding meetings with the security officials, civil society members, political representatives and journalist amongst others.

The objective of this visit is to give the envoy’s ‘a first hand’ experience of the normalcy that has been restored. A normal terror assessment and security evaluation is conducted before organizing these trips.

2. The issue of Palm oil restrictions that have been imposed, it has been pointed out that this is commodity specific and not country specific.

3. All important issues related to bilateral economic agreements, development assistance and the issue of Indian fishermen being apprehended were discussed with the Sri Lankan foreign minister who is presently on a two day visit to India.

4. There is no need to comment on everything that the Pakistan Prime Minister says regarding India’s internal matters. Pakistan needs to set its own house in order before lecturing other nations.

5. The issue of mob violence and damage of the Nankana Sahib Gurudwara was raised with Pakistan and a strong note of protests was registered.
