In what came as a shock to his massive social media following, sparking a host of debates and social media trends, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that he is ‘thinking of giving up’ his social media accounts.

“This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Will keep you all posted,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

‘No Sir’, ‘Please sir’, ‘Good Decision’ started trending on Twitter as people took to the microblogging site to retweet a ‘No Sir’ in response to PM Modi’s tweet, urging him not to quit social media.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to his Twitter account to tweet a ‘Give up hatred, not social media accounts’ in response to PM Modi’s tweet.

While the reason for PM Modi’s assertion is not clear yet, social media is full of theories as why PM Modi is likely to quit social media, some of which being that he could have felt discomforted by the manner in which social media has been used to promote hate or enmity and was trying to send a message by considering to give up social media altogether or even that PM’s tweet could have something to do with Women’s Day..

Prime Minister Modi has over 53 million followers on Twitter, over 44 million followers on Facebook and over 35 million followers on Instagram.
