Fact Check: The owner of Indian jewellery giant, the Joyalukkas, is not dead; here’s the truth

Date:

A few posts have been circulating on social media with claims that the owner of Joyalukkas, a jewellery brand based in Kerala and the UAE, has died of Coronavirus.

Here’s the link to the Facebook post.

FACT CHECK

We fact-checked the above claims and found them to be false.

First, we googled the name Joy Arakkal (mentioned with a spelling error in the claim posts) and found that the person referred to, has died of a heart attack. This was featured in multiple news reports.

Joy Arakkal is an NRI Petroleum refiner who owns one of the largest mansions in Kerala. He, however, has no links to the jewellery brand, Joyalukkas.

According to the official website of the jewellery house, the owner of Joyalukkas is Joy Alukkas.

This proves that the information in the above posts is a case of misidentification. Hence, the claim is misleading and false.
