COVID-19: Casual approach in dealing with virus makes Brazil pay heavily

The virus described as a ‘little flu’ by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has grown out of control now in the South American nation considered to be the most economically prosperous in the region.

Brazil’s Health Ministry has announced that the country now has about 177,000 cases and 12,400 deaths. This is the highest after the US and other European nations.

The President has sparred with the other governors of the provinces.

The former has completely ignored the seriousness of the virus and has by law decreed that even gyms and saloons as ‘essential services’.

He is on record to have stated that businesses cannot shut down due to the virus and the virus will not claim many lives.

The governors, on the other hand, have refused to open up their economies and have advocated social distancing to the practiced.

The President said that the governors are free to approach the judiciary against the Federal Government’s order and he himself threatened to sue the governors.

The nation which had about 12,000 cases in the beginning of April has witnessed a sharp 16 fold increase due to lack of seriousness in dealing with the virus.
