Fact Check: TRAI has not recommended 11-digit mobile numbers in India; here’s the truth

Several picture posts and media reports are doing the rounds on the internet with a claim that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has recommended 11-digit mobile numbers in India to help telecom companies to handle the rising population owning mobile phones.

The caption of the post read: ‘Attention please..!! Your mobile number can be 11 digit now!! Reason- The #TRAI is of the opinion that increasing the 10 digits mobile number to 11 would enable telecom companies to handle the rising #populationpressure‘.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral message and found the claim to be false.

We found a tweet by ANI, featuring a press release by TRAI, dated May 31, 2020. In the press release, TRAI has clarified that some media houses have reported that TRAI has recommended 11-digit numbering scheme for mobile services. It is complete misinterpretation of the aforesaid recommendations. TRAI has not recommended11-digit numbering scheme for mobile services.

“Some media houses have reported that TRAI has recommended 11-digit numbering plan for mobile services. As per TRAI recommendation,country will continue with 10-digit numbering,we’ve categorically rejected shifting to 11-digit numbering plan:Telecom Regulatory Authority of India,” the tweet read.

The above information proves that TRAI has not recommended an 11-digit numbering plan for mobile services and the message in circulation is false.
