Fact Check: Can Nebulizer Work As A Substitute For Oxygen Cylinder? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A video has gone viral of a man calling himself Dr Alok, wearing scrubs with the logo of Sarvodaya Hospital, claiming that a nebuliser machine can work as an alternative to an oxygen cylinder.

In the video, the man says he feels saddened that people are running around looking for oxygen cylinders, and what they could do instead is use a nebuliser. He then goes on to demonstrate how it works and fixes the mask to the nebuliser. He says it doesn’t even need a saline solution or medicine.

The post was shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption that reads, “ये सर्वोदय अस्पताल फरीदाबाद से डॉ आलोक हैं, उन्होंने रक्त ऑक्सीजन के स्तर में सुधार के लिए नेबुलाइज़र का उपयोग करके एक उत्कृष्ट तकनीक दिखाई है। ऑक्सीजन संकट के आज के परिदृश्य में यह कई लोगों की जान बचा सकता है”

(Translation: This is Dr Alok from Sarvodaya Hospital Faridabad, he has shown an excellent technique using a nebulizer to improve blood oxygen levels. In today’s scenario of oxygen crisis, this could save many lives)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim and found it to be misleading.

Starting with our investigation, we searched the web for any news article/official document corroborating the viral claim, but could not find any.

After doing a keyword search, we came across a tweet by Sarvodaya Healthcare in which they clarified that ‘the video has not been backed by any evidence or scientific study, does not reflect any medical advice and is in no way endorsed by Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad’.

It went on to state that, “Please do not follow any such practice without consulting your medical practitioner. It could lead to worsening of the disease.”

Also, nebulisers are devices that turn medicines into a fine mist that is then breathed in through a mask. According to a medical news website,” Each time a nebulizer is used, liquid medicine needs to be added to the machine. It is important that for the duration of use, breathing is only done through the mouth.”

Thus, it is clear that a nebuliser is by no means a substitute for an oxygen cylinder and the information given in the viral video is misleading.
