Fact Check: Image Of 2015 Nepal Quake Linked To Recent Assam Earthquake

Date:

An image of a partially collapsed building has gone viral on social media claiming that it depicts the disaster caused by the recent earthquake in Assam which rocked the state and left behind a trail of destruction. An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted Assam and other northeast regions on April 28, 2021.

The Facebook post was shared with a caption that read, “Morning Today’s A Major Earthquake Measuring 6.4 Richter Scale Hits Assam, Tremors Felt In North Bengal And Meghalaya.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

A simple Reverse Image Search directed us to an article by The Guardian that carried the same viral image. According to the article, the image was captured on April 25, 2015, in Kathmandu at a time when Nepal was jolted by one of the worst earthquakes in decades.

We found another article that carried the same viral image. The article published in 2016 is a case study of the 2015 Nepal earthquake. The description of the image reads, “Buildings in Kathmandu, Nepal damaged by the April 2015 Gorkha earthquake.”

Hence, from the above information, it is evident that an old image of the 2015 Nepal earthquake is being shared as that of Assam. Therefore, the post is MISLEADING.
