Fact Check: NO, This Video Does NOT Show ‘Ever Given’ Ship That Blocked Suez Canal On Fire

Date:

A video of a ship on fire is being shared on social media claiming that it shows the Ever Given cargo ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal earlier in 2021.

The text embedded on the video reads, “Why is the Ever Given (Evergreen) ship that blocked the Suez Canal, on fire? The things that were found on this ship would break your heart a million times over.”

The post is shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “Wow now the evergreen on fire.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.

Starting with our investigation, we searched the web for any relevant news article but we could not find a single credible media report about fire on the Ever Given ship since it was dislodged from the Suez Canal in late March.

Doing a keyword search directed us to an article published in an Austrian newspaper on May 27. The article carried the same viral video stating that it showed a ship called the MV X-Press Pearl burning for days off Sri Lanka’s coast.

Similar footage of the same ship can also be found in a Washington Post article published on June 15.

According to CBS News, the MV X-Press Pearl caught fire on May 20, and was up in flames for 13 days before starting to sink.

The ship, which was transporting chemicals, including many tons of nitric acid, and plastics, spilt massive quantities of plastic pellets into the sea, much of which ended up on Sri Lankan beaches, BBC News reported.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the video of the MV X-Press Pearl ship caught on fire is being shared as that of the Ever Given cargo ship.
