Fact Check: Old Video Of BJP MP Ravi Kishan Viral With False Claim

Date:

A video of Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan, who is from the BJP, is going viral on social media. In the video, he can be seen complaining about smell of sweat while sitting inside a car. The video is being shared with a claim that he made this comment with regards to members of the Dalit community.

The video started making rounds after Kishan posted his picture while having a meal with a member of the Dalit community.

Facebook users shared the video with the caption, “सांसद रवि किशन ने दलित के घर मज़बूरी में खाना खाया? दलित का पसीना महकता है उससे बदबू आती है?? वाह क्या आज की राजनीति हैं भाजपाइयों जनता को समझ क्या रखे हो ? सबका जवाब मिलेगा”

(English Translation: Did MP Ravi Kishan eat in Dalit’s house due to a compulsion? Dalit’s sweat smells, does it smell?? Wow, what is the politics of today? What do you think of the BJP people? everyone will get the answer)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

Firstly, we listened to the video carefully and found that Dalits were not mentioned in the clip at all. Here’s a transcript of the conversation:

Ravi Kishan: You’ve stuffed so many people inside (the car).

Another person: Two-three of us were already here, others came later.

Kishan: Your sweat smells so much.

Another person: What should we tell you Ravi bhaiya, we are running
behind Kanhaiyya bhaiya all day and night.

Kishan: So you will make me smell the sweat. Stop the video.

We then extracted the keyframes of the video and ran them through Reverse Image Search along with some keywords. We found that the same video was also shared by a Facebook user in May 2020.

We also found the same video in a report by Live Hindustan published in May 2020.

The English translation of the video read: An old video of MP Ravi Kishan has gone viral amidst painful pictures of migrant workers in corona lockdown. When opponents tried to corner him on ‘sweating’ with regards to the video, Ravi Kishan released a video from Mumbai saying that the video that has gone viral is from 2017 elections.

NewsMobile independently couldn’t ascertain the location and the origin of the video, but from the above information, it is clear that the viral video is old and is being shared with a misleading claim.
