Fact Check: Old Video Viral To Suggest Kejriwal’s Relative Arrested Recently In PWD Scam

Date:

Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh alias Honey, was sent to 14-day judicial custody in an illegal sand mining case on February 10, 2022, ahead of Punjab Assembly Elections. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Jalandhar on February 3, 2022, as part of its money-laundering investigation into the alleged sand mining operations in the poll-bound state.

In the above context, a video clip of a ABP News report has gone viral on social media which claims that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s nephew has been arrested in a PWD scam. The caption associated with the video insinuates that the incident happened recently after Channi’s nephew was arrested.

The caption associated with the video reads, “ਚੰਨੀ ਤੋ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਜਾ ਵੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਦੋ ਮੁੱਖਮੰਤਰੀ ਦੋਨੋ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਡਰਾਮਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣਜੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਭਾਣਜਿਆਂ ਨੇ 10 ਕਰੋੜ ਦਾ ਘਪਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ.” (English translation, “Kejriwal’s nephew arrested after Channi’s nephew. Both the CMs act like ordinary people but both their nephews are arrested. The two nephews embezzled Rs 10 crore.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On searching with the keyword, “kejriwal nephew arrested, ABP” we found the same video  uploaded on the YouTube channel of ABP News on May 10, 2018. The description associated with the video read, “In the PWD scam worth Rs 10 crore, son of Arvind Kejriwal’s brother-in-law has been arrested. Surender Bansal’s son Vinay Bansal has been arrested by the police. Surender Bansal’s company allegedly used fake bills in contracts of sewers and roads. This led to Rs 10 crore loss for the government.”

The Times of India had also reported about the incident on May 11, 2018. The report said, “The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of Delhi government arrested CM Arvind Kejriwal’s nephew in an alleged PWD scam. The accused, Vinay Bansal, is the son of Kejriwal’s late brother-in-law, Surender Bansal, who was a PWD contractor. He died away last year.”

Thus, an old news report regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s nephew has gone viral with a claim that he was arrested recently after Channi’s nephew was arrested.
