Fact Check: Old Video Of Lathi Charge On Lockdown Violators Viral With Misleading Claim

A video of cops chasing and thrashing people is being circulated on social media with a claim that policemen from the majority community brutally thrashed an elderly man from the minority community.

The video was shared with the caption, “Watch Hindutva radicalized cops brutally assault an elderly Muslim man.”

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be untrue.

We extracted keyframes of the video and put them through a Reverse Image Search. The search led us to a report by News 24 published in April 2020, where the same video was featured.

According to the report, the video is from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh where people were flouting lockdown and attacked the police when they were asked to follow lockdown protocols.

We also found visuals of the incident in a report by NDTV, dated April 6, 2020.

According to a News18 report, the incident took place at Karampur Chaudhary village in the Bareilly district. The police detained 40-50 people following the incident.

Replying to a similar claim on Twitter, Bareilly Police also clarified that the video is from 2020. The tweet read, “Concerned video is from 2020 when the complete lockdown was implemented. unlawful gathering tried to misbehave with police and police used mild force to disperse the crowd so that COVID infection would not spread.”

Hence, from the above fact-check, it is clear that the viral video is old and is being shared with a misleading context.
