Former New Zealand Pacer Heath Davis Discloses Homosexuality Publicly

Date:

New Delhi: Former New Zealand pacer Heath Davis has come out as gay and announced his homosexuality publicly in a documentary series called ‘Scratched: Aotearoa’s Lost Sporting Legends’.

Heath Davis represented his country between 1994 to 1997 playing 11 ODIs and five international test games. He becomes the second men’s cricketer ever to come out publicly and announce homosexuality.

The first men’s international cricketer to come out publicly was England’s wicketkeeper Steven Davies in 2011.

However, Heath Davis added that players in the Auckland domestic cricket team knew he was gay and people in the circle did not make a big issue out of it or made him uncomfortable in any manner.

In an interview with The Spinoff, the magazine added that “I felt there was this part of my life that I was hiding. There was a lot of that, just keeping your personal life separate. It was lonely, I was repressing it, I wasn’t living a gay life.”

He further added that “I was sick of hiding it.” Davis shifted to Australia after retiring from international cricket back in 2003 and started coaching since then.
