Fact Check: 11-year-old News Goes Viral as Fresh CBI Chargesheet Naming A. Raja as the Mastermind in 2G Scam

Date:

Latest news about the CBI filing a chargesheet in the 2G Scam, naming A. Raja as a ‘mastermind’ is doing the rounds on social media.

One of the social media posts reads: “2G Scam: CBI files first chargesheet, names Raja as `mastermind` in the ₹1.76-lakh crore telecom corruption case, Zee News. Earlier, in 2017, a Delhi court acquitted all accused, including Raja and DMK Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, for failing to provide sufficient evidence to prove charges.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the news, and found it to be misleading.

With a Google search, we found news reports on the website of several news outlets attributing to newswire IANS, dated October 5, 2022.

But the CBI court had closed the case in December 2017 by acquitting all the 17 accused involved, including A Raja. And digging further, our fact-finding team traced one more article in The Times of India, dated April 2, 2011.

Meantime, newswire IANS has also issued a clarification, and withdrawn the report.

So, the 11-year-old news item, in fact, has gone viral as recent, and CBI has NOT filed any fresh chargresheet in the 2G scam.
