New Delhi: India slipped six places on Global Hunger Index 2022 to take 107th position out of 121 countries, from its 2021 position of 101st, making it stand behind its neighbors Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

With a score of 29.1, the publishers of the Global Hunger Index have labeled the level of hunger as “serious.”

Seventeen countries, including China, Turkey, and Kuwait, shared the top rank with Global Hunger Index score of less than five, the website of the same that tracks hunger and malnutrition reflected on Saturday.

All Neighboring countries are above India on the Global Hunger Index, Pakistan has ranked 99, Sri Lanka 64, Bangladesh 84, Nepal 81, and Myanmar 71.

Countries ranked below India are Zambia, Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Liberia, Niger, Haiti, Chad, Dem. Rep. of the Congo, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Yemen.

GHI scores are based on the values of four component indicators; undernourishment which represents the share of the population with insufficient caloric intake, child stunting indicates the share of children under age five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition, child wasting reflects acute undernutrition in children under age five with low weight for their height and child mortality.

The data used for the indicators have been sourced from various UN and other multilateral agencies, including Unicef, World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Opposition leaders slammed the report to attack the BJP-led central government.

Congress MP P Chidambaram, citing the report, said our score has worsened since 2014 in the 8 years of the Narendra Modi-led government.

“When will the Hon’ble PM address real issues like malnutrition, hunger, and stunting and wasting among children?” he asked on Twitter.

Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said that the BJP gives speeches about creating a five trillion economy but 106 countries are “better than us in providing two meals a day.”
