FACT CHECK
Mobile fact-checked the viral pictures, and found it to be fake.
Looking closely at the image, we could see LION written on the body of the plane. A simple google search informs that it is the logo of LION air — an Indonesian airline. But we could not find any source informing about any incident happening in the recent past.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral pictures, we found many pictures with different description.
Picture 1:
A news article published in USA Today, titled: Investigators probe Lion Air crash in Bali, dated April 14, 2013, informs that the plane overshot the runway and crashed into the sea on the resort island of Bali before tearing into half. Luckily no fatalities were reported and all 108 people on-board were rescued safely from the crash site. Although this incident did happen in Indonesia, it took place nine years ago, and not recently. A similar article was also published in The Guardian.
A YouTube video on the official channel of India TV — an Indian news network, titled: Indonesia Lion Air plane crash into Sea in Bali, dated April 13, 2013, shows a picture in its news bulletin that matches with the viral image, and it corroborates the claims made in the USA Today report.
Picture 2:
Another news article in The New York Times, titled: Low-Cost Indonesian Airlines Keep Growing, Despite Troubling Record, has also carried information about the Indonesian Airlines.
However, we could not find a single source linking the images to any recent accident in Indonesia, nor could we find any credible news source informing us of any recent plane crash of Lion air.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral images claiming a plane crashed in Indonesia killing 178 people recently, is false.
