Spain’s 26-Man World Cup Squad Announced, Sergio Ramos And Thiago Snubbed

Date:

Barcelona: With the upcoming FIFA World Cup just around the corner, Spain announced the 26-man squad on Friday. However, the announcement has tracked major controversy after the exclusion of Paris Saint-Germain’s Sergio Ramos and Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara.

Former Real Madrid defender Ramos, who was a member of the 2010 World Cup-winning Spain team, was hoping to play in his fifth tournament.

According to reports, Ramos said that “Everyone knows what playing for Spain means to me.” He further added that “I feel good, I’m available, but it’s a decision that doesn’t depend on me, it depends on the coach.”

On November 17, Spain’s players will fly to Jordan to play a friendly match against that nation’s national team.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was also not included in Spain’s provisional squad.

Spain will face Costa Rica in its World Cup opener on November 23. In Group E, the 2010 champions will also compete against Germany and Japan.

Spain’s Squad: Unai Simon, Robert Sanchez, David Raya, Dani Carvajal, Cesar Azpilicueta, Eric Garcia, Hugo Guillamon, Pau Torres, Aymeric Laporte, Jordi Alba, Jose Gaya, Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Gavi, Carlos Soler, Marcos Llorente, Pedri, Koke, Ferran Torres, Pablo Sarabia, Yeremy Pino, Alvaro Morata, Marco Asensio, Nico Williams, Ansu Fati and Dani Olmo.
