Pune: Veteran actor Vikram Gokhale passed away on Saturday after being in critical condition for several days at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune.
Gokhale, aged 77, was hospitalized and was on “life support” for sometime. His body will be kept for Antim Darshan at Balgandharv Rangmanch.
His last rites will be conducted at 6 pm at Vaikunth Samshan Bhumi in Pune, the hospital said in a statement.
On Thursday, rumours of his death started doing rounds on social media as many actors including Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Aly Goni, Jaaved Jaafery took to Twitter to express condolences.
However, Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar from the hospital as well as the actor’s daughter refuted the rumours.
He left his mark over both Bollywood and Marathi film industry for several decades. After starting to work in the Marathi theatre at an early age, Vikram Gokhale made his film debut with the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer ‘Parwana’ when he was 26.
Following that he acted in several Marathi and Bollywood films, including Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Agneepath’ in 1990 and ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in 1999. He continued to work in Bollywood films like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Mission Mangal’ among others.
He was honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011 for his immense contribution in the field of theatre, and films. In 2013, his Marathi film ‘Anumati’ got him the National Film Award in the Best Actor category.
