Against the backdrop, a viral video showing collision of multiple cars on a road is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the viral clip, relating it to the earthquake in Turkey.
A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: A magnitude 6.0 Earthquake has struck an area of western Turkey near the city of Duzce, about 210km (130 miles) east of Turkey largest city Istanbul.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a news article, titled: İstanbul’da 12 araç zincirleme kaza yaptı: 1’i bebek 8 yaralı (English translation: 12 vehicles had a chain accident in Istanbul: 8 injured, including 1 baby), published by TRT Haber — a Turkish news and current affairs channel, dated November 23, 2022.
The image in the article matches with one of the keyframes of the viral video, informing that a chain traffic accident, involving 12 vehicles, took place in Sisli, Istanbul. Eight people, including a baby, were injured in the accident. This mishap happened when an overspeeding car crashed into a commercial taxi, and further caused a chain reaction of crashes on the D-100 Highway.
We also came across a YouTube video, titled: E-5’te Zincirleme Trafik Kazası, 12 Araç Birbirine Girdi, 1’i Bebek 8 Kişi Yaralandı (English translation: Chain Traffic Accident on E-5, 12 Vehicles Collide, 8 Persons Injured, including 1 Baby) published on November 23, 2022, on the official channel of Ihlas News Agency — a Turkish news agency.
Although the news is in Turkish, the visuals match with the viral clip, and the description of the video corroborates the claims made in TRT Haber, informing that the accident occurred around 1:20 AM.
Another article, published by TRT World – a Turkish public broadcaster, with a title: Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes northwestern Türkiye, dated November 24, 2022, says that the earthquake struck in the morning around 4:08 am.
This proves that the accident occurred about three hours prior to the earthquake, and thereby has no relation to the natural disaster.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, relating a collision of cars in Turkey to the earthquake that struck the same day, is misleading.
