Fact Check: Viral Image Showing PM Modi with Amit Shah in 1993 Is Misleading

Date:

An image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with another man is doing the rounds on social media claiming that he is standing with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 1993.

The image is shared with a text: Unique photo of PM Modi and Amit Shah during year 1993.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Running the picture through Google Reverse Image Search, we found few media reports in May 2022, mentioning that the image was taken in 1993 in Germany.

A NDTV report, dated May 4, 2022, says: ‘It shows a young PM Modi and one of his colleagues standing before the statue of Charlemagne, the medieval emperor in Western Europe, who founded the Holy Roman Empire’.

Similar reports were published by ANI and Hindustan Times. According to the reports, the image was taken in 1993 in Frankfurt where he had a brief halt while returning from the US to India.

On searching further, we found a tweet where the man was identified as Dr Sanjivbhai Oza from Rajkot.

As per the Facebook profile of Sanjiv Oza, he is an RSS member and Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Ayurved University. And some of his recent pictures with old ones prove that he is the same person as seen in the viral image.

Hence, it is clear that the viral image showing PM Modi with Amit Shah is misleading.
