Package With Uranium Found At London’s Heathrow Airport, Pak Link Suspected

Date:

London: British authorities launched an investigation around a package containing Uranium that had arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport last month.

The police in a statement claimed that the quantity of Uranium was very small, posing no direct threat to public health.

According to Reuters, the Uranium was detected during a routine scanning process on December 29.

According to a report by The Sun, the package allegedly originated from Pakistan and arrived on a flight from Oman.

A BBC report further stated that police are looking into the angle which can be a result of “poor handling” in Pakistan.

Richard Smith, head of London’s Police Counter Terrorism Command added that the quantity of the radioactive material was very small and was assessed by experts who confirmed that it posed no risk.

A source close to the BBC added that the radioactive material was discovered in a “shipment of metal scrap”.

Uranium is a silvery-white metallic chemical element in the periodic table, with atomic number 92. Uranium, if refined or “enriched” into U-235 concentrations, can be used as fuel for nuclear power plants and the nuclear reactors.

The police further added that the airport scanning operation handled the situation and no further arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Smith further added that “We will of course follow every avenue to see what the background of this was and satisfy ourselves that there’s no further threat,”.
