How Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe Convinced PM Modi To Join Quad, Abe’s Memoirs Released

Date:

New Delhi: After the tragic death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, his memoir named ‘Abe Shinzo: Kaikoroku’, talks about his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

Shinzo Abe’s memoir talks about his “first stint” as a leader from September 2006 to September 2007, where he tried to convince the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “to form a new grouping of the U.S, Japan, India, and Australia – today’s Quad”.

The memoir further added that “the Indian leader was hesitant. Singh was reluctant to damage relations with China”.

Talking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Abe said “Singh’s successor, Narendra Modi, was more understanding,”.

Abe’s memoir said that “Modi’s stance was that India would not join the Quad if it was just the U.S. and Australia,”. He added that “But if Japan was going to take the lead, he was going to say yes.”

The memoir further shares anecdotes of his diplomatic affairs with world leaders like the then US President Donald Trump, and British Prime Minister Theresa May.
