New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his comments against the government on China’s aggression, saying that it is not the Congress leader but Prime Minister Narendra Modi who sent the Army to the LAC as a countermeasure.

EAM S Jaishankar during an interaction with the newswire agency ANI shared his views on a range of issues and topics.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Countering the allegations of opposition, EAM Jaishankar said the Modi government had increased the budget by five times to ramp up border infrastructure.
  • Talking about the allegation against the government for being defensive and reactive on the China issue, EAM S Jaishankar dismissed the claims saying there is currently the largest peacetime deployment along the China border.
  • Talking about Rahul Gandhi’s claim that EAM Jaishankar doesn’t know much about foreign policy, he said “If he has superior knowledge, wisdom, I am always willing to listen.”
  • EAM S Jaishankar further talked about the narrative pushed by some Western media against India.
  • He added that “This is politics at play by those who don’t have courage to come into the political field.”
  • EAM S Jaishankar questioned the timing of the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Modi.
  • He said “We are not debating just a documentary or a speech that somebody gave in a European city or a newspaper edits somewhere — we are debating, actually politics, which is being conducted ostensibly as media,”
  • He further added that “You do a hatchet job and say this is just a quest for truth which we decided to put out 20 years later.”
  • EAM S Jaishankar opened up about the transition from being a top bureaucrat to a politician.
  • He said “I didn’t make the transition, it happened. Once I entered, in all honesty, I myself was unsure.”
  • He further added that “From joining politics to becoming a Cabinet member and standing for Rajya Sabha, it happened one by one. There’s a learning curve to it.”
  • Talking about ‘Operation Dost’, he said “The earthquake happened and in a very short time, he (PM Modi) wanted to know our thoughts. Within a few minutes, we were told to go. In less than 48 hours (teams were sent to Turkey)”.
