Fact Check: Video of a Man Setting Shop on Fire Fictitiously Linked to Alleged Attack on Bihar Migrants in TN

Date:

A video showing a man setting fire to a store’s front counter has gone viral on social media claiming that it depicts an occurrence from Tamil Nadu in the light of several reported attacks on migrant workers in the state who speak Hindi hailing from Bihar.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: Tamil Nadu me ye kya ho raha hai?” (English translation: What is happening in Tamil Nadu?)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified the YouTube channel of Manorama News carrying the same viral video on March 4, 2023. The video caption reads: “Lottery shop fire asking if we need monopoly capitalism”.

Searching further, we found another vide report carrying the same viral video on March 5, 2023, with a caption: “Facebook Live that will burn the shop, attack within hours. Trippunithura city was shaken by the incident last day. The youth entered Meenakshi Lottery Agency and set fire to it by pouring petrol on it. The police caught the attacker, but the reason for the attack is not clear.”

Another news report also reported the same incident stating that it happened in  Tripunithura in Ernakulam district, Kerala.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an unrelated video is falsely linked to the alleged attack on Bihar migrants in Tamil Nadu.
