Fact Check: Old Image of Kia Oval Cricket Ground Covered In Snow Goes Viral As Recent

The final of the World Test Championship is all set to begin on June 7, 2023, between India and Australia, at The Oval in England. Against this backdrop, an image claiming that the ground is currently covered entirely in snow is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: ইংল্যান্ডের দ্য ওভালের বর্তমান অবস্থা (English translation: Current situation at The Oval in England)

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the picture, we spotted a tweet on the verified Twitter handle — Johns that matches exactly with the viral image and the caption confirms that it is The Oval. 

The user tweeted the picture on December 12, 2022, indicating that it has been online since then. A similar visual of the ground from the same day has also been tweeted by former Pakistan cricketer Azhar Mahmood

Another news article in ABP News, dated December 13, 2022 and titled: WATCH: Oval Cricket Stadium Goes Under Snow. Netizens React As Video Goes Viral, informs that the stadium is The Oval, but the image is from December 2022. 

The image credits in the article are given to Surrey cricket’s Twitter handle. And as per the description, the Twitter handle for Surrey Cricket is also the official handle of the Kia Oval cricket ground. This proves that the viral image is from December 2022, and not recent.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image claiming The Oval cricket ground is  currently covered in snow is misleading.
