Fact Check: Is Central Government Lowering The Retirement Age? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A newspaper clip, allegedly published by Amar Ujala, dated April 1, 2023, is widely shared on social media, claiming that the Central government would soon reduce the retirement age of employees.

The headline of the viral article reads: “33 साल की हुई नौकरी तो 60 से पहले रिटायर हो जाएंगे केंद्रीयकर्मी” (English translation: Central government employees will retire before 60 after 33 years of service)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a simple keyword search, we traced a similar report published by Amar Ujala on September 17, 2019. An online blog published the same viral clip on September 24, 2019.

There was no date on the original news clip. When the viral news clip is compared to the original one, it becomes clear that the viral news clip is not a current story and that the date on the tape has been digitally altered to make it appear recent.

Some other news outlets speculated about the government’s plan to cut the retirement age back in September 2019. But, since that time, the government has not suggested changing the retirement age in this manner. The Central government has debunked all of these allegations by making it clear in Rajya Sabha that there is no such proposal to lower the retirement age below 60 years.

We also came across a tweet by the government’s fact-checking agency PIB Fact Check that also debunked the viral claim on December 19, 2019, stating that “No such announcement has been made by the Government of India, in which employees will be retired after 33 years of service or at the age of 60 years.”

The government confirmed in response to a query in March 2022 in Rajya Sabha that no such plan to raise the retirement age for Central government employees is being considered by the government. We also could not find any credible media report that corroborated the viral claim.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the Central government is not planning to lower the retirement age.
