Centre Seeks Views Of States And UTs On Same-sex Marriage Amid Supreme Court Hearing

Date:

New Delhi: As Supreme Court hears petitions seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage, the Centre on Wednesday filed a fresh affidavit before the apex court for views of states and Union Territories (UT) on the matter.

According to reports, the centre wants the states and UTs to become a party in the case and they will have to submit their views within 10 days.

A letter written to all the chief secretaries of the states added: “Any decision on this matter requires an assessment of the ramifications on existing social customs, practices, values, norms, state rules and such like that may be prevalent in different sections of the society.”

The letter further adds: “It is important that a composite and cohesive view is presented before the court incorporating the views of all state governments for effective adjudication.”

Earlier on Tuesday, A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud heard the arguments over the legality of same-sex marriage. The Centre argued that only Parliament can decide on the creation of a new social relationship and the court must first examine if it can hear this matter.
