Fact Check: Video of Woman Interrupting Eid Prayers In Virginia Goes Viral With False Claims

Date:

A video claiming a Hindu woman created ruckus during Eid prayers in a mosque in Virginia, US, is doing the rounds on social media. The woman can also be seen spewing Islamophobic slurs to the people around her. Users have shared the video blaming the BJP and RSS for manipulating the minds of Hindus across the globe.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: “A Hindu woman in Virginia, US, entered a mosque during Eid prayer, got on the mimbar, created a ruckus, and spew lslamophobic slurs. She was later arrested. Modi and BJP have been poisoning Indian minds beyond borders. The RSS poison has spread far and wide. It is now threatening social cohesion in western countries. Respect to the Muslims for their patience & not giving her a reaction or she would’ve played the victim card.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Google Keyword Search about the video, we spotted many posts on different social media channels. Under one such video on Twitter, we found a quote tweet by another user debunking the video and claiming that the claims made are false.

The verified user has attached a screenshot from a post by the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), clarifying that the woman is Muslim and is suffering from a mental illness that caused her to do all that.

Searching further for the official handle of ADAMS, we got to know that ADAMS is one of the largest Muslim communities/mosques in the DC Met. The community organisation, led by a small group of families in Herndon and Reston, Virginia, was founded in 1983.

The group has also issued an apology on their Facebook post, dated April 22, 2023 for the behaviour of the woman, informing that she is a Muslim and is suffering from mental illness. The family of the woman, too, apologised for her behaviour and requested people to remove the video from social media as it was hurting their privacy.

We found the same apology on ADAMS’ official Instagram handle as well.

Finally, to confirm whether the incident happened in ADAMS mosque or not, we checked for Google images of the mosque and found an image that matches one of the frames of the viral clip.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming a Hindu woman interrupted Eid prayers with Islamophobic slurs in a mosque in Virginia, is false.
