Manipur Violence: 30 Terrorists Killed, Several Arrested, Says CM N Biren Singh

Date:

Manipur: Security forces have so far killed some 30 “terrorists during operations to stop violent occurrences and attacks on citizens and to restore “peace” in the state”, said Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday.

“In retaliatory and defensive operations against these terrorist groups, who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 30 of these terrorists have been killed in different areas. A few have also been arrested by the security forces,” said the CM in a media interaction.

In addition, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh strongly condemned recent violent activities that targeted civilian homes in the valley’s outlying areas. BJP MLA Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh’s house was also vandalised, and his vehicles were set on fire.

Appealing for people to maintain peace, the CM said, “The gunfight is between the armed terrorists and the security forces and not between the communities. So I urge common people to maintain peace and stay united.”

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to overcoming any issues that might arise with regard to the state’s territorial integrity. He emphasised the intention of the government to deal with and stop any actions that threaten the security and possessions of the people.

Singh met with Army Chief General Manoj Pande, and they had an extended discussion about the current state of the security situation in Manipur. Singh received an update from the Army Chief on the proactive steps taken by the armed forces to restore peace and stability in the area.

Earlier this month, a wave of clashes erupted in the hilly state, triggered by a solidarity march organised by tribal communities on May 3.

The march was organised by the tribals to express opposition to the Meiteis’ community request to become a Scheduled Tribe. Over 75 people were reported to have lost their lives as a result of the violence.
