Fact Check: Viral Clip Of Men Harassing Women On A Crowded Street Shared With Misleading Claim

Date:

A video claiming 100-500 Muslims pushed and harassed Hindu women on a busy road is widely shared on social media. Many users have shared the video giving it a communal angle and warning Hindu women to avoid visiting these roads as Hindu women are disappearing from such places.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: (English translation: Hindu girls whether you are 2 or 4 or 10 years old, you should never dare to go through their area where their crowd gathers. Go through any other route, however far that route is. You should always avoid going through such places, because more of our Hindu girls are disappearing from such places. The incident was accidentally filmed on a mobile. Then understood what was going on? By taking advantage of the group of 100 to 500 jihadis, those Hindu girls were pushed, and disappeared… What would those murderers have done? Guess you can’t even sleep at night. Please be aware and alert everyone.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team identified a YouTube video on an unverified channel, dated August 19, 2021, and titled: Girls Sexually Assault in Public | Minar-e-Pakistan | Independence Day Celebration | 14Aug2021.

The video looks like an extended version of the viral clip as we can match the keyframes from 1:00 to 2:53. The title informs that the incident happened at Minar-e-Pakistan, and we can notice a Minar-like structure at 6:53.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to check for the pictures of Minar-e-Pakistan, we found the images of the monument match exactly with the Minar in the YouTube video, confirming that the incident happened in Pakistan.

We also came across a tweet by the official handle of Punjab Police, Pakistan, dated May 5, 2022. It was tweeted in order to reply to an existing tweet related to the harassment of women in Pakistan. The caption debunks the claim, and confirms that it is an old video from Pakistan.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Muslim men harassed Hindu women on a busy street, is false.
