Fact Check: Viral Video Of Tomato Smuggling In Bihar Is Scripted

The Central government is frequently criticised by the opposition for the growing costs of many essential and regular commodities like tomatoes. According to media reports, the cost of tomatoes has increased to between ₹60 and ₹200 per kg in various regions of the nation.

Against this backdrop, a video claiming to show police personnel catching a tomato smuggler in Bihar is widely shared on social media with a caption: “टूटे पैर के बहाने छिपाकर ले जा रहा था दुनिया का सबसे महंगा माल, जो गरीब नहीं खरीद सकता।#Biharnews” (English version, below.)

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING. 

The NM team were not able to find any credible media report corroborating the viral claim.

But closely watching the video, our team could find a disclaimer on it at 2:55 seconds timestamp which stated that it was a scripted video. 

We also found the same video uploaded on the Facebook page of Social Junction, dated July 4, 2023, with the same caption. This video also had a disclaimer that it is completely fictitious and made for entertainment purposes only. 

Social Junction has also given this information in the bio of its Facebook page that all the videos posted on the page are scripted, which are made for entertainment or spreading awareness.  

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video of tomato smuggling in Bihar is scripted.
