New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action by sending a notice to the Government of Manipur regarding the disturbing incident. The notice concerns the mob taking away five members of a family from police custody in B. Phainom village of Kangpokpi district on May 4, followed by a distressing act of parading the women naked and sexually assaulting one of them.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Manipur.
The NHRC has asked for a comprehensive report on the matter within a span of 4 weeks. The report should include details on the status of the investigation of the FIRs registered concerning the incidents, the current health status of the victim women and other injured individuals.
NHRC had also inquired about any compensation granted to the affected persons or their families.
The horrendous incident occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, 35 km from Imphal, as reported by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF). According to the tribal organisation, the two women were subjected to a heinous gang-rape in a field before being humiliated and dehumanised in public.
Leaders from various political parties and individuals have taken to social media to express their shock and call for stringent action against the perpetrators.
As the investigation progresses, the nation awaits justice for the victims and severe punishment for the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime.
