An image showing a child in a bulletproof vest holding a mini-blackboard stating ‘First day of school’ is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim this is how a mother dresses up her child for the first day of school in Texas. The picture is being shared linking it to the gun violence in the state.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: A mom here in my county told me three weeks ago through tears that she purchased a bullet-proof insert to put in her daughter’s backpack. She couldn’t buy the one that stops AR-15 bullets, because it weighed almost as much as her 5-year-old. This is our reality in Texas.

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, the NM team spotted a news article in MARCA — a Spanish national daily, dated August 16, 2022, and titled: Texas child shown in a back-to-school advertisement wearing body armour.
The video keyframes attached to the article matches with the viral image, informing that the video shows an ad commissioned by a group of mothers in Texas ‘PAC Mothers Against Greg Abbott’. According to the report, the ad was made in order to take a stand against Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, after the shooting incident that took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, just before the summer break.
Similar news reports about the ad were also published in Newsweek, Chron, and KXAN Austin as well.
We also came across a YouTube video, titled: First Day of School, published on the official channel of Mothers Against George Abbott, on August 15, 2022. Here too, at the 19-second mark, we can see the keyframe match the viral image, confirming that it has been clipped from the longer 30-second video ad.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture, claiming to show a mother dressing up her child with a bulletproof vest, is misleading.
