The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) recently organised a rally against Chin-Kuki narco-terrorism in Imphal, Manipur, on July 29, 2023. The rally was attended by a large number of people. Against this backdrop, a viral image showing some people holding banners stating ‘Kukis are foreigners and Meiteis are refugees’ is doing the rounds on social media.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: I am curious about this protest. If Kukis are foreigners and Meiteis are refugees, who are the real indigenous people? Why stir up the illiterate public when they are not even aware of the situation and circumstances!!!

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Running a Reverse Image Search, the NM team spotted a Facebook post on an unverified channel of Kha-Potshangbam Times — a local Manipuri media house, dated July 29, 2023, with a caption: COCOMI rally only.
One of the images in the post matches exactly with the viral picture except for the text on the banner that people are holding. The banner in the Facebook post states ‘Kukis are foreigners in Manipur chapter’
We also came across a YouTube video on the official channel of TOM TV — a Manipur-based satellite TV channel, titled: COCOMI’S MASS RALLY AGAINST KUKI NARCO TERRORISTS HELD, on the same day.
The video shows an hour-long telecast of the entire rally and at 17:52, we can clearly see people holding that state ‘Kukis are foreigners in Manipur chapter’. We could not find any other banner matching the viral picture in the entire YouTube video.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video’s claim is baseless.
