A video showing a crowded shopping area is widely shared on social media claiming that it depicts only immigrants in Sweden.
The video is shared with a caption: “This is Sweden in 2023. Notice the lack of actual Swedes. Sweden is an occupied country”.
Here’s the link to the above post.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.
Performing a Reverse Image Search, the NM team spotted a YouTube page carrying the extended version of the viral video on June 5, 2022. The video caption reads: “A walking tour of the famous Abbara market in the centre of Aleppo (a city in Syria), which is characterised by the diversity of its shops. Near the clothes store, there is a store for household appliances, and near the shoe store, there is a store for electrical appliances. Thus, Al-Abbara market is the most diverse commercial market in the city”.
The small sculpture at timestamp 6:18 in the YouTube video can be found in stock images of Aleppo as well.
The mosque that can be seen at timestamp 7:15 in the video was identified as Abbara Mosque in Aleppo on Google Maps.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video shows a crowded shop in Aleppo, Syria, NOT Sweden.
