Fact Check: Unrelated Images Of TN Minister In A Photo Collage Go Viral With False Claims

Date:

A collage of photos of the Transport Minister of Tamil Nadu, Sivasankar, getting into a car and a photo of students hanging from a bus is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared posts criticising the minister for enjoying luxuries while the common people do not have proper facilities for their day-to-day transport.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: புதிய மாடல் Innova காரில் மந்திரி, கால் வைக்க கூட இடம் இல்லாமல் மக்கள்…
வாழ்க #திராவிட_மாடல்!
(English translation: New model Innova minister in car, people don’t even have a place to step their feet… Long live #Dravidian_model!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

The man in the first image is the transport minister of the Tamil Nadu government. But running a Reverse Image Search of the second image, our team traced a news article on DT Next — a news portal from the Daily Thanthi group in Tamil Nadu, dated September 2, 2016, and titled: 100 additional small buses to boost connectivity to remote residential areas

The picture used in the article matches exactly with the viral image and the date of posting of the article indicates that it was taken during the AIADMK regime led by Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu. Thus, the picture cannot be related to the present transport minister of the DMK government.

Searching further, we found the same image published in another news article on November 25, 2017. This indicates that the image might have been used for representational purposes only.

Though we could not verify the original source of the image, it is confirmed that the image is not related to the ongoing DMK government or the current transport minister of Tamil Nadu, Sivasankar.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, linking an image of a Tamil Nadu minister entering his luxury car with the struggles of a common man in the state, is false.
