Fact Check: Former Cricketer Heath Streak ‘Very Much Alive’; Death Rumours Spread On Internet

Date:

Cricket fans across the globe received the devastating news of the demise of former Zimbabwean cricketer Heath Streak. People took it to social media to condole the death of the cricketer.

One of the posts on Facebook read: “Zimbabwe legendary cricketer Heath Streak passed away at the age of 49. Condolences to his family.”

The above post can be seen here. National and international media also carried the news of Streak’s sudden demise.

The news spread after Heath Streak’s former teammate, Henry Olonga posted on ‘X’ (f.m.a Twitter) about Streak’s demise (which is now deleted).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checkers found the news to be untrue as Heath Streak is ‘very much alive’.

Going through Henry Olonga’s ‘X’ account, we found another post in which he denied the news about Streak’s death. In the X post dated August 23, 2023, at 10:27 AM (IST), Olonga shared a screenshot of his WhatsApp chat with Heath Streak where he himself confirmed that he is ‘very much alive’.

Digging further, we also found a report by Mid-Day dated August 23, 2023, in which former Zimbabwe captain, Streak himself falsified the news of his death, saying he is alive and well.

“It is a total rumour and a lie. I’m alive and well. I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified, especially in our day and age of social media”, Streak was quoted as saying by Mid-Day. “I believe the source should apologise. I am hurt by the news,” he added.

Hence, with the above findings, we can conclusively say that the news of Heath Streak’s demise is false and he is alive.
