Fact Check: No Derogatory Slogans Raised During Biden’s Visit To Hawaii, Viral Post Is Doctored

Date:

After the deadliest US wildfire in over a century hit the region of Hawaii, primarily concentrated on Maui Island, President Joe Biden visited the impacted areas on August 21. The fires have claimed at least 115 lives, and 850 missing.

Meanwhile, a video of President Biden walking on the streets alongside First Lady Jill Biden has gone viral on social media, claiming that people chanted derogatory slogans against  Biden upon his arrival in Maui.

A Facebook user shared this video and wrote, “Sleepy Joe landed in Hawaii. The entire population there is shouting -“Fk Joe Biden”.

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found it to be false.

During the initial investigation, we observed several replies from the users on the video in which they mentioned that the video is doctored as no such slogans were raised.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, the NM team came across a report by Washington Post, dated August 22, 2023, showing similar footage. At 1:20 seconds of timestamp, one can see the viral footage. However, no such chants or slogans were raised as claimed in the viral video. So, the viral video is doctored.

A Facebook live by World News Now, dated August 22, also carries the viral video. The ambient sound can be heard as Joe Biden and the First Lady walked alongside Governor Green and his wife Ushiroda Green. However, no such slogan was raised during his visit. According to the report, President Biden told the survivors of Hawaii’s wildfires that the nation “grieves with you” and promised that the federal government will help “for as long as it takes” Maui to recover from damage caused by the deadliest wildfire.

Biden arrived in Maui 13 days after fire ravaged the western part of the island killing at least 115 people. Standing near a severely burned 150-year-old banyan tree, the president acknowledged the “overwhelming” devastation but said that Maui would persevere through the tragedy.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video was doctored and no such derogatory slogans were raised during Joe Biden’s visit.
