Fact Check: 2021 Animated Video Goes Viral As Footage Of Chandrayaan-3 Landing Released By NASA

On August 23, 2023, India made history by becoming the first country to successfully make a landing on the south pole of the moon. The successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 made India the fourth nation to land on the moon after the US, the former Soviet Union and China.

Soon, a video showing a spacecraft flying across the moon and making a soft landing went viral on social media. Many users claim it is the footage released by NASA showing a glimpse of the ISRO Chandrayaan-3 mission landing on the moon.

A Facebook user shared this video with a description: “American satellite video of Chandrayaan-3 soft landing — actual moment of landing. American NASA.”

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, our NM team came across the same video on the YouTube channel ‘Hazegrayart‘ posted on June 08, 2021, with a title: “Apollo 11 Moon Landing.”

Also, the longer version of the viral video on the same channel explains about the Apollo 11 moon landing. The title of the video reads: “The Apollo 11 Moon Landing: A Historic Moment in Space Exploration”. At 42 seconds of timestamp, one can see the viral footage.

Many people have written in the comment section that the animation in the video is of excellent quality. When a person asked why the channel has edited the first words spoken from the surface of the Moon: “Contact Light On”, ‘Hazegrayart’ channel replies: “YouTube says that portion of the audio is copyrighted by someone.”

Our team also traced the X handle of Hazergrayart and found a tweet by the author in 2018, which confirms that the page shares animated works, not real footage.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video has been on social media since 2021, and shows an animated video recreating the United States’ historic Apollo 11 moon mission.
